I think most of the mistakes Westerners make when it comes to China would be not spending enough time in the market; not really understanding the opportunities and challenges; not taking regulations seriously enough, or at least not understanding the administrative burden of doing business in China.

Try to have a robust staffing policy and HR systems, because it hiring and keeping staff, and motivating them, are so different in China compared elsewhere. 

Focusing on those two things should avoid most of the key mistakes that I’ve seen made.
